Tommy Wong: VR/AR requires synergy of AI and 5G, and there should be a standard for smart home
Global Sources Mobile Electronics show opened in Hong Kong recently. The 4th VR/AR/MR Ecosystem Summit was also held where industry experts shared their views and analysis. As the organizer of the show, Tommy Wong, President of Global Sources Electronics Group, shared the following viewpoints: 1.Alongside the development of Artificial Intelligent (AI) and 5G, AR/VR devices and content are expected to reach to a new inflection point. 2.More and more China OEM enterprises are focusing on enhancing manufacturing quality, thus are transforming into ODM and OBM. 3.Unified industry standard will be the breakthrough for the smart home industry Wong further added that as AI and 5G technologies are penetrating into all walks of our lives, AR/VR devices and content are expected to reach to a new inflection point. AR/VR devices and content involve multiple aspects, such as critical technologies in hardware, software, optics, hearing, transmission speed and many more. It takes hardware to keep up with changes and optimization. At the same time, software and applications involved are maturing too and there new in-depth applications in education, sports, medical and retail areas. Alongside the maturing AI and 5G technologies, their integration with VR, AR is going to tremendously drive the audio visual upgrade and motion detections. At present, smart home products cover various aspects including smart security, smart power supplies, smart entertainment and intelligent travel. “Smart living” requires high-level software integration and support of fundamental technologies. Auto induction and auto response will be the future development trends for smart home products and applications will be shifting towards natural interaction between devices and people, changing from smartphone controlled to voice-controlled. Nevertheless, difference and incompatibility in technologies and standards of different brands are hindering further development of smart home industry. It requires standardizing the software and technology criteria to realize interconnection and increased functionality for the industry. Unifying from the foundation level is the core condition for further development. Finally, Wong mentioned that there are more strong electronics enterprises joining the Mobile Electronics show. With the growing demand from consumer markets, many China OEMs have started focusing on enhancing manufacturing quality to synchronize with global markets. In terms of ROI, there will be more China enterprises shifting from OEM to ODM and OBM.
